FAIRBANKS |
Located in the heart of interior Alaska, Fairbanks is Alaska's second largest city with over 80,000 residents in the greater Fairbanks area. Situated near the confluence of the Tanana and Chena Rivers, the town was originally founded in the early 1900's as a trading post serving stern-wheeler riverboats and early gold prospectors. Fairbanks is approximately 370 road miles north of Anchorage, which is about eight hours by car.
North Pole is located about 14 miles south of Fairbanks on the Richardson Highway. It was first incorporated as a city in 1953, and serves as a hub for about 15,000 residents who live in the surrounding area.
Daylight hours in the Interior vary greatly depending on the time of year. In the summer, days can be as long as 22 hours of sunlight, while in the winter they can be as short as only 4 hours of sunlight. Temperature ranges also vary greatly, reaching temperatures of 90 in the summer to -40 or colder in the winter! The beautiful scenery, the plentiful wildlife and the breathtaking Northern Lights all help to make this a great place to live.
